Mo Willems’ Elephant & Piggie Books

We found our first Elephant and Piggie Book when my oldest was in Kindergarten, I think, so around 2010. There were probably about 12 books out at that point. All 3 of my boys loved to listen to them and could even start sounding out words and reading them when they were first learning to read. (Though these books are easy to memorize, so after a few reads they’re not really sounding out words anymore.)

We have followed these books over the years and I think we’ve read all of them. We just checked out Mo Willems’ last book in the series, The Thank You book (#25).

This book does not disappoint. It’s just as funny as the other books and my 5 year old daughter has requested me to read it several times since we checked it out.

If you want to read more news about the Elephant & Piggie books, you can look at the author’s blog.

In fact, there are lots of fun ideas for celebrating Thank-o-rama month at this new website. So start thanking away.

We’d like to thank Mr. Willems for writing such fun, colorful, and witty books to be enjoyed by the whole family! Thank you Mo Willems.

Picture Books

When I was searching for an old post on the blog recently I found this list from 4 years ago of books I wanted to read to Blake before kindergarten. It’s funny to remember myself as a first-time parent trying to find all these books. I know that I didn’t, but it was a fun goal at the time.

Now, 4 years later, I’m more of a seasoned parent with 2 children already in school and I know that it doesn’t really matter. But I still am trying to read as much as I can with Isaac this year before he starts kindergarten in the fall.

Indiana does full-day kindergarten and I’ve finally resigned myself to putting Isaac in it, instead of fighting for half-day or something. So he’s not going to get home each day until 4pm. That makes me very sad. But Blake and Clark both took naps until kindergarten, so I am using this year without naps to spend time reading books with him, playing games, and doing little lessons.

It was hard to give up that nap-time break at first, since I’ve always had nappers in the afternoon. He does do quiet time for an hour each day, but somehow he slowly wanders into whatever room I’m in (usually my office or bedroom) and talks to me half the time. 🙂

So instead of trying to read all the picture books on those other lists I’m going to share a list of some of our favorites. It was fun to see that some of the ones I hadn’t heard of 4 years ago are now in our personal collection and some of our favorites.

National Library Week

If you read this blog regularly you know that our family LOVES the library. I have cards to 2 different libraries and go to each one at least once a week. Well, this week is National Library Week and I want to help honor libraries!

Our local library is currently having some financial restraints so I am going to donate a dollar to our library for each comment I get on this entry. Please show some love to the library by making a comment!

And here are a few lists you can comment on if you want. The people at Fuse #8 recently took a poll and came up with the Top 100 Children’s Novels and Top 100 Picture Books.

I’m happy to note that I’ve already read Blake 2 of the top 10 Children’s novels – Charlotte’s Web and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. He really enjoyed both of them and I’m about to start A Wrinkle in Time with him.

5 Unknown Series Your Kids Will Love

I read to my kids everyday. We have a ton of picture books, but the majority of them fall into one of these series: Berenstain Bears, Curious George, Clifford, Arthur, Winnie The Pooh, or Little Critter.

And I get a little bored of reading those books over and over.

So recently we’ve found a few new series.

1. George & Martha by James Marshall

We don’t own any of these yet, but my boys always love them when we get them at the library. We just found a new one:

200 Books Before Kindergarten

Since Blake will be starting kindergarten this fall I thought I would look up the 100 picture books to read before starting school. (I have looked at lists like this in the past) Problem is, I found multiple lists with very different books.

List 1

List 2

List 3

Any sane person would have browsed the lists and just marked down a few to get at the library. But not me.

I am a list person, and a book person…so this is right up my alley. And here are a few I’m surprised didn’t make it.

Seriously, I’ve read some of the classic stories like Mike Mulligan and the Ferdinand one to my kids and they didn’t like them. Then some really good ones get cut out. Weird.

I was also surprised they had these series represented: Curious George, Clifford, and Little Critter. But nothing from the Berenstain Bears or Arthur series, which are two favorites in our home.

Oh well, 206 books were listed and we’ve only read 81. We’ve got some work to do!
