RecoMonday: A Friend for Dragon by Dav Pilkey

I kicked off our Mommy & Me Book Club this month with some fun Dragon books. All of my kids love this series by the author of the Captain Underpants books, Dav Pilkey. We made some apples and/or pumpkins to go along with the books.

These books are a little longer than the average picture books, so probably good for 3 1/2 year olds and up.

RecoMonday: Mitchell Goes Bowling

We found this Young Hoosier Book Award Nomineee today at the library. The story is great, but the pictures really sell the story.

I haven’t heard of the author before (Hallie Durand), but I’ve definitely seen the illustrator. Tony Fucile is the illustrator for Bink & Gollie books by Kate DiCamillo and we love those books! I found out there’s another book about Mitchell so I’ve already put it on hold at the library.

RecoMonday: Olivier Dunrea’s Gosling Books

Recently I’ve read some of Olivier Dunrea’s gosling books to Isaac, which I used to read to Blake when he was little.

This one is my favorite. Ollie yells at Gertie & Gossie that he wants boots and once he finally gets some boots, he yells that they are too hot. Isaac and I started quoting the lines to each other in the car the other day and he thought it was so funny. The older boys started joining in as well. “These boots are too hot!!”

Classic.

RecoMonday: Author – Kevin Henkes

Lately Clark has been into Kevin Henkes’ books. We own a few of them, and I recently purchased this one.

He is obsessed with it and wanted to copy Lilly by putting band-aids all over himself to show how brave he is.

(we ran out of band-aids so he added some stickers)

Then we checked this book out at the library…and now he has to walk backwards with his eyes closed to show how brave he is.

I love it when my children copy things from books. It becomes this special family joke.

RecoMonday: Lesser Known Picture Book Series

I read to my kids everyday. We have a ton of picture books, but the majority of them fall into one of these series: Berenstain Bears, Curious George, Clifford, Arthur, Winnie The Pooh, or Little Critter.

And I get a little bored of reading those books over and over.

So recently we’ve found a few new series.

1. George & Martha by James Marshall

We don’t own any of these yet, but my boys always love them when we get them at the library. We just found a new one:

A few others in the series:

George and Martha
George and Martha: Rise and Shine
George and Martha Encore
George and Martha Tons of Fun
George and Martha Back in Town
George and Martha One Fine Day
George and Martha: One More Time
George and Martha Two Great Friends
George and Martha: The Best of Friends
George and Martha: Full of Surprises

2. Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems

We own this book and the kids enjoy it, but just recently I found 2 other ones in the series at the library and my boys absolutely loved them.

There is also:

Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!
The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too!
The Pigeon Wants a Puppy
The Pigeon Loves Things That Go!

3. The Teacher from the Black Lagoon by Mike Thaler

My kids were a bit frightened of this at first, but Clark loves it now that he’s gotten used to it. We found a few other stories in the series at DI and they are just as good.

The Gym Teacher from the Black Lagoon
The Principal from the Black Lagoon
The Substitute Teacher from the Black Lagoon
The Art Teacher from the Black Lagoon
The School Bus Driver from the Black Lagoon
The Music Teacher from the Black Lagoon

We own Bear’s New Friend, but love any of the others that we can find at the library.
